By Michael John Sanchez. Double-stops are when you play two notes at once on the fiddle, but you play both of the notes with a finger down. You can also call double-stops chords. As you’ve found with the fiddle, it isn’t always easy to put your finger down in the right spot, but now with double-stops, you have to do two down at the same time. Exercises and short fiddle tunes are used to teach specific viola double stop techniques, such as playing and reading two notes together, crossing strings to double stops, and finger spacing within the key of G major. As the book is studied, the student can learn how to hear the notes blend in double stops and work on a smooth tone from the bow.

A recent message to Simon Fischer about the Scales book Part of a recent letter to Simon Fischer about the tone exercises Recent comment from As for vibrato - Jean is right, the chapter on vibrato at the end of Simon Fischer’s Basics book is a treasure trove. The first ten or so exercises of the chapter will directly address. Then, for all the other double-stops in the scale, use fingers 1 and 3 if the notes are two frets apart (the second and third double-stops, for example) and use fingers 1 and 2 if the notes are one fret apart (the fourth and fifth double-stops, for example). With your right hand, strike only the 1st and 2nd strings.

Double Stops is a scale-study book. By dealing with the various technical elements of the scales one at a time, it makes it easy to practise each facet on its own. At the same time the exercises gradually build everything back together into the complete scale.   Buy ABRSM: Viola Scales and Arpeggios (from ) Grades by Ed: ABRSM (ISBN: ) from Amazon's Book Store.
